About

Baby Eagle Takes Flight

Matthew Hender is a veteran musician from Newfoundland, who has taken his first foray as a singer-songwriter. With the inspiration of the songwriters of the early 70s, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, and John Lennon, Matthew would start to write and perform all the music on his own. His first album, Baby Eagle, was well received and he was awarded the Music NL 2021 Rising Star of the Year Award.

A classically trained bass player, Matthew has been playing in the St. John's music community for over 15 years. He has performed with Amelia Curran, The Long Distance Runners and currently with The Kubasonics and Bluegrass bands, Crooked Stovepipe and High & Lonesome. He recently has toured with noted groups, Fortunate Ones and Rube and Rake and has had the pleasure of touring all across Canada as well as eastern Europe, Japan, and Russia. Matthew has been nominated for and won MusicNL, ECMA, and Juno awards as a bass player with various projects throughout his career.

Currently, Matthew is in mid production on his sophomore follow up and holiday EP with producer and engineer, Mark Feener.

“Matthew is someone that deserves a lot more attention, he’s been getting some attention, but he deserves a lot more attention. He has great sensibilities and sensitivities to the craft and the art in making good songs, so keep an ear open for Matthew Hender.”
